Atheism doesn't need a set of guidelines or a new milder public image. Atheism is not an organised world movement with top official speakers like Sam Harris.. Christopher Hitchens is not my new age spirit mentor but it's too bad I can no longer meet him. Atheism is a growing trend. That's it. No one puts me in a preconceived generalized type of atheist box to stand in. Not being convinced any supernatural claims need or merit any of my attention has nothing to do with my tolerating or disliking religious groups.

Organizing atheism is a very very bad idea. That's the perfect recipe for extremism and that would be a...big problem.

Atheism 2.0! So basically just typical atheism?
-
This talk should be called World View and Methodology 2.0. Atheism is the absence of belief in god or gods, and in my opinion, it does a great disservice to apply any credo to this term. There may well be truth to his assertions, but in my mind a secular replacement for any of the functions the church is perceived to fulfill bears no relationship to Atheism. If, for example, you don't believe in alchemy or bloodletting, you might be described as an A-alchemist or an A-Quackist, and in no way are you required to understand chemistry or medicine to hold this position, nor are you required to posit an alternative.

Glad we still have TED talk that isn't completely trash.

Judo-christian religion is about forcing people into submission by violence when coercion by propaganda fails. We do not need atheism that operates like religion. We need to set the people free. People need to start producing culture instead of consuming it.

freeze the video at 2:21 and see if you can spot the religious people

Alain de Botton for president!

I'm actually slightly worried about atheism. I'm an absolute, 100%, monotheistic, Trinitarian theocrat (תֵאוֹקרָט). I recognise the importance of free will, variety, etc.; but atheism still worries me. This is because I never quite know what to make of it. I think, if we're living in a universe, where God is evaluating our beliefs and actions – taking action based upon those evaluations – atheism may very well be one of those things instigating natural disasters, gloomy cosmic threats, etc. I think it would be wiser, if we installed good global child policies, to proactively reverse engineer global population to 200-600 million – the amount of people on Earth when Christ (יֵשׁוּעַ) was alive. At the moment, as of Jan 2017, it's 7.5 billion and rising. How do you know you're not just adding to God's target practice? It's scary. Very, very scary; even for those of Us left as survivors, imagine the mess we have to clean up. My respects to the dead anyway, but you can see how serious the situation is. The good, global child policies – alternate between no-child policies and 3-female-children only per household, per 33.3-year period of parenting. These kinds of child policies are designed to curb population increase that is destroying the planet; while allowing for children to keep being born (albeit gender specifically and incrementally). Males produce more CO2: more testosterone, bigger internal organs, larger lungs, more carbon dioxide. Already Zika virus and an Alzheimer's pandemic are putting the brakes on growth. This means people need to think very seriously now. Praise be to God, Yakhas HaZahav, (יחס הזהב) forever and ever. Amen, אָמֵן.

It's true. Ideas today are what drives the future. How can we preserve important ones while also encouraging new ways of thinking? A puzzle for Atheim 2.0. Can the dogma be "secular"? somehow and not inhibit new ideas that challenge people to think in different ways?

Does being secular or lack of religious beliefs have to mean lack of creativity and traditions? I don't think so. Our completely rejecting certain imaginary ideas doesn't mean we reject all traditions and creativity. Being atheists we are simply humble enough to recognize and accept the distinction between facts and our creativity. Besides, there exist some secular cultures that have practiced interesting and creative traditions around the world. I don't like the idea of turning to religions as the major sources of creative traditions.

philosophy is worse than religion.

Is the guy who got decimated by Steven Pinker during the Munk debates?
-
This guy gives religion to much credit. The truth is religion stole these things from the secular world. The only difference is religion added the threat of guilt, fear and death if you don't follow their particular doctrine. These threats still stand today.

http://www.ted.com What aspects of religion should atheists (respectfully) adopt? Alain de Botton suggests a "religion for atheists" -- call it Atheism 2.0 -- that incorporates religious forms and traditions to satisfy our human need for connection, ritual and transcendence. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate If you have questions or comments about this or other TED videos, please go to http://support.ted.com
