The island of Hydra, approx. 65 km southwest of Athens, belongs to the Saronic Islands. Our short visit of this island was part of the Athens One Day Cruise, to which we were invited by the tour operator, on occasion of a conference in Athens. The island of Hydra is approx. 20 km long and 4 km wide. The largest portion of the population lives in the town of the same name at the west coast. They make their living mainly from tourism, fishing and arts and crafts. Only means of transport are donkeys. Right next to the harbor entrance there is a famous Naval Academy. Hydra has a long tradition in shipping. The active shipbuilding started already in 1500 AD. Two thirds of the ships of the Greek fleet came from Hydra. Hydra played an important role in the wars of liberation against the Ottomans. Famous sailors, like Andreas Miaoulis, came from the island. At that time, the biggest portion of the woods has been destroyed, therefore, today the island appears barren today. Important painters and writers were born on the island of Hydra. King Ludwig I. of Bavaria from the House of Wittelsbach was an enthusiastic promoter of art. This gave rise to the Munich School. His son Otto was the first king of Greece. At that time there was a lively cultural exchange between Bavaria and Greece. Nikolaos Vokos, born in Hydra, is one of the leading artists of the Munich School of Greek art. Also a number of writer and musician lived on the island. The most famous representative is Leonard Cohen, who wrote two books here. The island of Hydra often served as a film set. Already in 1957, the American movie Boy on the dolphin with Sophia Loren was shot here. The red house can still be seen at the harbor. By a number of restrictions one could keep the idyllic charm of Hydra. Cars are forbidden. As well neon signs, discotheques, antennae, receiving dishes and plastic chairs. But also tripods when filming on the open road, what we find a little exaggerated! Darin enthalten war ein Kurzbesuch dieser Insel. Die Insel Hydra ist ca. 20 km lang und 4 km breit. Der größte Teil der Bevölkerung lebt in der gleichnamigen Stadt an der Westküste und lebt überwiegend von Tourismus, Fischerei und Kunstgewerbe. Einziges Verkehrsmittel sind Esel. Direkt neben der Hafeneinfahrt gibt es eine berühmte Marineschule. Die Schifffahrt hat auf Hydra eine lange Tradition. Ab 1500 n. Chr. entwickelte sich auf Hydra ein reger Schiffsbau. Zwei Drittel der Schiffe der griechischen Flotte kamen aus Hydra. In den Befreiungskriegen gegen die Osmanen spielte Hydra eine wichtige Rolle. Berühmte Seeleute, wie Andreas Miaoulis stammten von der Insel. In jener Zeit wurde aber auch der größte Teil des Waldes vernichtet, deshalb ist die Insel heute so karg. Bedeutende Maler und Schriftsteller wurden auf Hydra geboren. Der Wittelsbacher König Ludwig I. von Bayern förderte besonders die Kunst. Daraus entwickelte sich die Münchner Schule. Sein Sohn Otto wurde erster König von Griechenland. In jener Zeit gab es einen regen Kulturaustausch zwischen Bayern und Griechenland. Nikolas Vokos ist einer der Vertreter der Münchner Schule in der griechischen Kunst, die von Hydra abstammten. Aber auch eine Reihe von Schriftsteller und Musiker lebten auf der Insel. Berühmtester Vertreter ist Leonard Cohen, der hier zwei Bücher schrieb. Die Insel Hydra diente auch oft als Filmkulisse. Bereits im Jahre 1957 wurde hier der amerikanische Spielfilm „Der Knabe auf dem Delphin“ mit Sophia Loren gedreht. Das rote Haus ist heute noch am Hafen zu sehen Die Bewohner lehnen den Massentourismus ab, das musste auch Richard Branson erfahren, der hier lange für den Bau einer Hotelanlage warb, aber dennoch keine Genehmigung erhielt. Man bemüht sich aber auch, dass Hydra keine Enklave des Jet-Sets wird. Der Tourismus besteht hauptsächlich aus Tagestourismus aus dem nahen Athen. Durch eine Reihe von Einschränkungen konnte man den idyllischen Charme von Hydra bewahren. Autos sind verboten. Ebenso Leuchtreklamen, Diskotheken, Antennen, Satellitenschüsseln und Plastikstühle. Aber auch Stative beim Filmen auf offener Straße, was wir nun etwas übertrieben finden! Die Immobilienpreise sind die höchsten in ganz Griechenland. ..........
