LG Andreas
Cologne Cathedral Gothic at its best? For more than 500 years, Germany's largest cathedral, located in Cologne, was nothing more than a construction site until it was finished in 1880 at last. Some critics make nasty comments saying that it is much more a Neogothic church than everything else. Anyhow, since having been finished in 1880, it was the tallest building on Earth for four years because of its twin towers (157m / 515 ft), and until the completion of the tower of the Ulm Minster in 1890, it was the tallest church. Since 1996 it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered to be Germany most visited landmark, attracting around 20,000 people every day.
and an amazing gothic structure in the centre of it all that refused to be destroyed. Years later a friend described his arrival by rail in Cologne for the first time and being met by the overwhelming spectacle of a great massive cathedral -at night...and all lit up. A few years after my parents returned from Europe and presented me with a colour poster of the great buildings' South side. The poster has long been framed and hangs in a place of prominence where I can see it several times a day. From it I draw inspiration, courage and at times, resilience. I can't imagine what might happen to me should I see the cathedral in person.Neo-gothic?? Were the towers and steeples not designed in the 1300's and built according to the purely gothic principle 500 years later? Anyone criticizing the design is surely compensating for some visual or cerebral impairment.
