A visit to the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway on a windy Tuesday 15/09/15. The video shows locomotive No. 9 'Winston Churchill' at work and includes a ride I had on the footplate from New Romney to Hythe and return. I can recommend a trip on the railway itself, and a trip on the footplate is well worth the extra cost. My thanks to the driver who made it such an interesting trip, explaining everything as we went along. The video starts with the first arrival of the day from New Romney to Hythe, and, after turning on the turntable, Winston Churchill has to add a couple of extra carriages to the train. I was delighted later in the day to find out that this was the locomotive I was to ride on. For the past 88 years the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway has been an integral part of the landscape of the Romney Marsh. Known as “Kent’s Mainline in Miniature”, the World Famous one-third full size Steam & Diesel locomotives have powered their way along the 13½ miles of track from the Cinque Port town of Hythe, terminating in Dungeness; a National Nature Reserve and one of the largest shingle landscapes in the world.
