Sherman Smith’s magnificient novel, GOLDEN CITY ON FIRE (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/9176370402), is a true pleasure to read. It is a thriller, written as if you were there – at the time of the Great San Francis...

Santa Cruz, California where my husband is from is about an hour south down the coast from San Francisco. His mother's relatives lived in San Francisco during the earthquake and she use to tell me stories they had told her about it. She also gave me a book (the first book published about the quake) published after the quake. It's cool too.

It is humbling to grasp or imagine even an inkling of the agony and devastation that took place. I wonder now what the tremor was like then in this very space surrounding my keyboard.

Musci:ALBINONI ADAGIO The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was a major earthquake magnitude 7,8 or more that struck San Francisco and the coast of Northern California at 5:12 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. Devastating fires broke out in the city that lasted for several days. As a result of the quake and fires, about 3,000 people died and over 80% of San Francisco was destroyed. The earthquake and resulting fire are remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States alongside the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.[6] The death toll from the earthquake and resulting fire is the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history.
