We are heading downward into a polluted sky which will heat the planet - from today - 1.5 degrees hotter by 2050 - this will halve an already diminished ability the sea and land has, now, to feed us. *And there will be 9.5 billion people then.   Today, we have to all agree on 'no new cellphone' - our kids are just kids (means us big kids too, yes); we can't say yes to the new phone. (We can care and look after them though.)   And we have to institute 1 child per couple birthrate. For all countries. We have to match and surpass the deathrate for at least 4 to 5 hundred years, to get our worlds population down.     We are not stupid, as a life form in this galaxy:  ...........  'We can do this'!!

Hey guys...how about replacing petroleum based plastics/all plastics with an organic base material? We must have the tech know how dont we? I'm way off my field here, but seems to me that we ought to focus on this very important issue of keeping our oceans healthy otherwise we may as well start drawing numbers (not for a prized lottery).
On this specific subject, educating people to recycle and to be proactive in keeping everything man made out of the oceans is probably the better way to tackle this but I also think that there needs to be a backup plan (as in a substitute for plastics) because I don't think education is working fast enough or at all.
Every year, there seems to be more out there. I work in/on the Western Pacific ocean (12 years and counting) and I see this junk floating everywhere. Don't me wrong, the Western Pacific Ocean is still beautiful, but for how much longer?
