Worlds longest cross-sea bridge in SE China closer to completion. The decks of the 55-kilometer Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) were fully connected on Tuesday. Branded as “the Mount Qomolangma of bridges,” the crossing is the world's longest cross-sea bridge. The megastructure links the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Zhuhai city of southern Province of Guangdong and Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR). The main bridge, which stretches for 22.9 kilometers, has a steel superstructure weighing over 400,000 tons, enough to build 60 Eiffel Towers, while the submerged tunnel runs for 6.7 kilometers, with two artificial islands as its east and west terminals. The "Chinese-knot" design on the Qingzhou Channel Overpass, the dolphin-shaped steel towers on the Jianghai Channel Overpass and sail-shaped steel towers on the Jiuzhou Channel Overpass, add to the beauty of the Lingding Sea.The construction started in December 2009 and the life span of the bridge is set at 120 years. It reportedly can stand magnitude-8 earthquake, scale-16 typhoon (strong enough to uproot a tree), as well as the collision with a 300,000-ton ship. The building of a bridge of such massive scale will enormously contribute to the economic activities in the Pearl River Delta, one of China’s fastest growing regions. The delta is home to over 56 million people, spreading across urban centers including Hong Kong, Macao, Zhuhai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan. Moreover, the bridge will greatly reduce the travel time between the three cities. Currently, it takes more than three hours to drive from Hong Kong to Zhuhai or Macao. Once the bridge is complete, it will only take 30 minutes. As a milestone in the evolution of Chinese mega construction, the HZMB has been regarded as one of the “Seven Wonders of the Modern World” by British newspaper The Guardian.
